CPR with AED (Level C):

This cardiopulmonary resuscitation course (CPR) provides the skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults, children and babies. This course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest CPR guidelines and training in the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). This qualification is valid for 3 years.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Designed to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, and perform rapid defibrillation.

Intended Audience
In-facility care providers, including nursing staff, care aides, medical and dental professionals. Pre-hospital care providers, which may include professionals in a fire service, rescue team, sports-medicine, lifeguards and ski patrol.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation course for all Alberta Health Services patient care positions – particularly in hospital and first response.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

This is the foundational emergency cardiovascular course for all healthcare professionals and first responders intended to help improve patient outcomes. BLS teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in pre-hospital and in-facility settings.

Participants completing this course will be able to promptly identify numerous life-threatening emergencies, give effective chest compressions and administer appropriate ventilations, and become proficient with an AED. The participant will be able to administer these techniques on an adult, child, or infant. This course will include realistic scenarios, simulations and role playing with state-of-the-art animations.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for:

  • Healthcare professionals and trained first responders in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings
  • People who require BLS Provider status and CPR training to enter into a healthcare-related job or program

Course Overview and Design

This course focuses on the essential skills rescuers need to know to perform high-quality CPR in a wide variety of settings. After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
  • Describe and apply all of the steps of the Chain of Survival
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, child, and infant
  • Describe and demonstrate the important early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Provide effective ventilations using a barrier device
  • Perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • Describe and apply the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for an adult, child, and infant
